Materials required
Signature 4ply wool 20g for cracker & 25g for hat
3mm Crochet Hook
Stitch Marker
Wool needle
Ribbon
Cardboard Tube
Cracker Snap
Joke
Buttons
Abbreviations
ch chain
ch sp chain space
st(sts) stitch (es)
ss slip stitch
dc double crochet
dc2tog double crochet 2 together
htr half treble
tr treble
dtr double treble
Tension
Check your tension after Round 1 to ensure that it fits the cardboard tube.
Method
The Christmas Cracker is made in the round, starting with 2 ch sts and joined with a ss to complete the round.
Christmas Cracker Pattern
Make 2
Using 3mm hook ch 26 and join with a ss into 1st st.
Round 1 2 ch (does not count as a st), htr into each ch st, join with a ss into top of 1st htr (26 sts)
Be careful not to twist your stitches.
Rounds 2 – 10 2 ch (does not count as a st), htr into st at base of ss and each following st, join with a ss into top of 1st htr (26 sts)
Round 11 5 ch (counts as a dtr and a ch), miss a st, * dtr, ch, miss a st, repeat from * to end of round, ss into 4th ch (13 dtr sts)
Round 12 5 ch (counts as a dtr and a ch), * dtr in dtr st, ch, repeat from * to end of round, ss into 4th ch (13 dtr sts)
Round 13 2 ch (does not count as a st), htr into st at base of ss and into each ch sp and dtr st, join with a ss into 4th ch (26 sts)
Rounds 14 – 22 2 ch (does not count as a st), htr into st at base of ss and each following st, join with a ss into top of 1st htr (26 sts)
Round 23 2 ch (does not count as a st), htr into st at base of ss and each following st, join with a ss into top of 1st htr.
Make a Chain Stitch loop ch 6, ss into 6th ch from hook.
Fasten off and sew in ends.
Place onto a cardboard tube up to where you crocheted the double trebles, covering one half. Place a cracker snap into the tube. Tie a ribbon around the double treble stitches and pull tight.
Fill the tube with your cracker prize, joke and hat and then place the other piece over the cardboard tube with the cracker snap poking out and tie your ribbon in place. Use the chain stitch loops to connect the two halves together.
Hat Pattern
Using 3mm hook ch 15
Row 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st (14 sts)
Row 2 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last st, 2 dc (15 sts)
Row 3 ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in 1st st, dc to end of row (16 sts)
Row 4 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last 2 sts, dc2tog (15 sts)
Row 5 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc2tog in 1st 2 sts, dc to end of row (14 sts)
Row 6 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last 2 sts, dc2tog (13 sts)
Row 7 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc2tog in 1st 2 sts, dc to end of row (12 sts)
Row 8 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last 2 sts, dc2tog (11 sts)
Row 9 ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in 1st st, dc to end of row (12 sts)
Row 10 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last st, 2 dc (13 sts)
Row 11 ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in 1st st, dc to end of row (14 sts)
Row 12 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last st, 2 dc (15 sts)
Row 13 ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in 1st st, dc to end of row (16 sts)
Rows 4 – 13 Repeat until your crown fits around your head.
Last 4 rows create button holes
Row 1 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in every st until last 2 sts, dc2tog (15 sts)
Row 2 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc2tog in 1st 2 sts, dc to end of row (14 sts)
Row 3 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc in 1st 2 sts, * ch, miss a st, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from* to last 3 sts, dc, dc2tog (13 sts)
Row 4 ch 1 (does not count as a st), dc2tog in 1st 2 sts, * dc in ch sp, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * to end of row. Fasten off. Sew on buttons.
Oh and you’ll need a cracker joke!
